RETURNED SOLDIERS
EXECUTIVE MEETING The fort,nightly meeting of tho Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association was held last, evening, tho president (Mr A. C. Laing) being in the chair. Eight new members and two honorary members were elected, and throe inward and four outward transfers and throe resignations wore approved. Tho Unemployment. Committee’s report recommended that the sum of £1.2 be voted tho Tiavensbonrne Amenities Society to he spent in work to ho carried out in improving a plantation at Ravonsbonrne This money was to he granted on the understanding Unit the society subsidised it £ for £. It was also recommended that a further £’2(to be voted Mr Tannoek, it being understood that the votes allocated to the City Council for work carried out bv Mr Tannoek would shortly bo expended. The report stated that forty-four returned men were-now employed on various public, works. About, nine single men were unemployed, but none of these were urgent eases. An Imperial soldier had been given assistance by being provided with a railway fare and a small loan.
Tlio report was approved. Tim General Secretary wrote with reference to deductions from economic pensions liy way of superannuation and payments from friendly societies. The letter stated that Avhen the matter came before the last, meeting of tho executive standing su ivcoiiiinitt.cn it was pointed out that the Pensions C'ominittec of tho council had thoroughly considered it, and tho council eventually adopted Mm commit tee's recommendation to strike out the remit upon tho subject. Tu the circumstances it. was decided by (lie sub-committee that no further action he taken.—Received.
The following resolution, a _ copy ol which was to be sent to the Prime Minister and the Now Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, was carried: — “That, the association express its approval that the 'War Disability Removal Bill, as Far as conscientious objectors were concerned was not passed.” The Secretary reported that at the end .of August this year the association’s membership was 1.234, as against 1,2-16 at the same time last year.
