POLICE COURT

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13. (Before Mr J. U. Bartholomew, S.M.) CASE ADJOURNED. A young man, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was charged on remand with having attempted to commit suicide. Mr C. J. L. White said that the man, who had been drinking heavily at the time,, bad been found in a _ position which may or may not have indicated an attempt to take his life. It was a temporary lapse from sobriety, for the accused had previously borne an excellent character. Counsel suggested that the matter be adjourned for six months, with a condition perhaps that he abstain from liquor. Mr White added that it would not be admitted that accused attempted his life. Senior Sergeant Quartennain said lie had no objection, to this, but thought the man should also bo prohibited from entering hotels. Mr White said that such a condition would prejudice the man’s employment, and the magistrate agreed that this might he so. The matter was adjourned _for six months, the magistrate ordering accused to abstain from liquor during that period, and to refrain from entering hotels, except in eases of absohuo necessity for hoarding purposes. Accused was also to be under the supervision of Mr F. G. Gumming for the period named DRUNKENNESS. Edward James Healey, a statutory first offender, was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, on a churtro of drunkenness.
