It was reported at Mastcrtoii yesterday (states a Press Association telegram) that the Bank of New Zealand proposes to open the Waingawa Freezing Works this season. The Wairarapa Frozen Meat Company, which recently decided not to renew the lease of the works from the bank, but to operate in conjunction with the Wellington Meat Export Company at Ngaurahanga, vacates the works at the end of September, and it is understood that the bank proposes to operate them under its own management. .Regarding the Rimutaka. trouble (the dismissal of men on an unemployment job), Mr C. J. M’Kenzic, Assistant Engincer-in-Chicf of the Public Works Department, stated it was true that twenty men had been put off—all being single men except two. There Lad been police complaints in regard to the conduct of the men, which was allegedly due to drinking. Married men from the Tawa- Flat job were being sent to Rimutaka. Mr “thought the statement attributed to the engineer regarding the putting off of all single men would be found to lack confirmation Some' twenty-eight members attended the twelfth half-yearly meeting of_ the Mosgiel Industrial Co-operative Society, which was presided over by Mr D. Connor. The balance-sheet showed a net surplus of £382 17s Id. The committee recommended the appropriation of the surplus in the following way To 7 A per cent, interest on capital reserve account, £76 ss; discount on purchases account, £216 12s; laid debts account, £4B 17s -id; reserve account, £-11 2s 9d. The report stated that interest on share capital could bo drawn as per rule book, but it left would be earning interest from July 1, 1927. Members would receive a rebate of Is in the £ on all purchases paid tor during the past six months. This might be taken out in goods or added to thoir share capital. Mr Bond gave a satisfactory report on the checking of the stock. Mr D. Connor was re-elected president, Mr Haigb secretary Mr A Wilson treasurer, Messrs M Duff and J. Lait scrutineers, and Mr J. S. Initio auditor. In accordance with Rule 14 Messrs M. Barratt, J. Hicks, and J. D Ha mb retired as members of committee, but on a vote being taken these gentlemen wore re-elected, i. be manager and staff were accorded a special vote of thanks. The Town Clerk reported to the Mosgiel Borough Council last night that tlic drainage of the recreation ground was now almost complete. The work had been carried out by returned soldiers, the money being subscribed mainlv by the R.S.A., the Taieri hootball Club, and the Otago Rugby Union. A small amount was added by the Borough 'Council. The footballers wore granted a renewal of their rent of the ground for 1923 season on the usual terms. The Mosgiel Borough Council will hold a special meeting on the 20th hist, to consider the best means of protecting the water supply pipe line at Gow’s crossing, which was damaged at the recent flood; also to consider the position in general of the storm water drainage of the borough, this matter having been brought before last night’s meeting by correspondence and deputations from ratepayers.
