General Young, Commandant of the New Zealand Forces, has been to Dunedin bn duty, and left for Wellington this morning. Mr John M'lndoc and his wife started this morning for a six weeks’ trip to Tahiti to see Mr MTncioc’s mother. ' - Mr B. J. Jackson, of the firm of Samuel Turner and Co., Manchester, ended his Dunedin visit this morning, and went by tho through express to Christchurch, on his way home. - Mr ■ S. Bowman loft this morning tor .Wellington and Greymoulh. Miss Hilda Scurr caino homo tins mornin>, bringing with her six first prizes, three seconds, and the senior elocutionary contest prize from the Invercargill competitions. d . , s Mr E. A. Rosevearo came up from Invercargill by tho express this morning. . 1 Mr A. S. Cambridge arrived from Auckland last night. . Mr J. W. Smith, of Invercargill, returned from England, with his wife, by the Talnui this week, and after spending a day in Dunedin they motored home. As a result of a recommendation from ■the members at the last annual meeting of the Dunedin Male Choir, “ that associate members be appointed from those ex-mem-bers who had performed signal service for the ohoir,” tho following have been appointed as associates:—Messrs,W. GeninieU and T. W.Slater (Auckland), H. Blackwood (Hamilton), V. R. Cooke (Wanganui), W. Fraer and A. T. Reid (Christchurch), R. F. Algie (WUimatc), T. S. Tomlinson and H. Wilson (Invercargill), and W. E. MTCmlay (London). The last-named will shortly be visiting Dunedin. It was x also decided to award gold bars for continuous service to Messrs G. Herrick, F. W. Parker, and J. A. Howden for fifteen years, and to Mr A. G. Melville for twenty years. _ Mr A. W. Romeril, who is at present postmaster at Moray Post Office, has been promoted to the position of supervisor .of-the delivery branch in the city Telegraph At a meeting of the Peninsula County Council and the Portobcilo Road Board sympathetic reference was made to -the death of Mr James Mncandrew, a former member of, the latter body and a prominent resident of the Peninsula. At each meeting a motion pf condolence with his relatives was passed. The death is reported at Wellington ot 3lr C. A. Knapp, who was formerly m the Public Works Department., from which he retired in 1891. Ho was 81 years of ago. The late Mr Knapp took a keen interest in athletic of all sorts. Ho represented Wellington frequently at cricket and also at "football, both as a player apd as an umpire. Tie was a prominent oarsman, and latterly showier. ... - ;,Mr Walter Wright has been m ill-health ■for tho' past six months, and his condition is now giving his many friends much concern. . ’ His Honor Mr Justice Sim will leave for Christchurch by tho north express on MonAtnon" the guests at the Grand Hotel are Mrs J. Now visitors to the Excelsior Hotel include Mr and Mrs Ward (Waneanui), Mr 6, Hunter (Wellington), Messrs T. D. Sheahan, J. H Mundy, F. Tonkin, B. O’Connell. F. Carroll, H. O’Neil, P. Smith, C Pearce, P Hanrahan, L. Clarkson, C. Stewart,, C. Woodham, H. J. Pearce, B. ..Gahagon, and D. Oliver (Christchurch).
