MILFORO SOUND
VISIT OF CARINTHIA AMERICAN APPRECIATION Recording tho visit of tho liner Carinthia to that “wonder spot,” Milford Sound, one of the tourists writes to an Australian paper as follows:--“Many Americans declared that Milford Sound was the most beautiful of its kind in the world, excelling tho fiords of Norward and Alaska. Others agreed that, while perhaps lacking the variety of the Alaskan fiords, Milford Sound was much bolder in outline, and had a more dramatic entrance. Tho Carinthia is the biggest ship to make the sound. “ A tiny motor boat scuttled for the shelter in astonishment when tho huge Cunarcler swung slowly through tho quarter-mile gateway. “Everyone thronged the rails, taking snaps and movies of the beauty and grandeur of Milford Sound, which almost beggars description. On either side tho rugged peaks rose sheer from tho water’s edge to as high as 4,000 ft, backed by others 9,000 ft high, it was like being looked in a giant, rockbound ditch. “ Down each mighty crag, as though coining from the sky, water fell, cutting delicate white traceries. It came from tho glaciers, many of which, living on tho mountain sides, brought gasps of admiration from tho tourists. Waterfalls and a huge snow and icecappod peak at the top of the sound completed a picture-which will live for ever in memory.”
