ALEXANDRA NOTES.

A Reform tally is to ba held in Alexandra on Monday night, and advantage will ho taken of the presence of Mr itobert Scott, M.P., in the district to arrange an interview between him and the jubilee preliminary committe© to discuss tho, mutter of asking for a Government subsidy towards tho proposed celebrationis. There is every likelihood of the matter being enthusiastically taken up, and if tho citizens of Du.nedin show come practical sympathy with the idea- it will be a big advertisement for the district. We can still produce some of the original pioneers—to wit, Mr Parcell (Bannockburn), Mr M'Connechie and Mr Dickie (Clyde), Mr William Thovers (of this town), Mr John Pitches and "Mr William LeasJt (Ophir), and ethers —men who came, saw, loved, and remained, and have grown from youth to vonerable old age in the district. The weather hero has been excellent, and to-dav the sun is out and the atmosphere all that could ba desired. This has been without doubt a magnificent winter. Two of our local runhokters are away for the winter months. Mr S. T. Spain, of Earnscleugh, is at Rotorua, where he some time ago purchased an estate; and Mr Andrew Jopp, of Moutere, is at Hamner. Mr Spain's estate is on thcyfeordcre of tho country where bush sickn&ss prevails, and if the "experiments of the Government should be successful his property will be a very valuable on-2, ull the more so that it is in the direct route of the Tauranga-Rotcruu proposed railway. Lite Alexandra Borough Council have"turned down" the Carnegie grant. It was felt that the burden which the upkeep of such an elaborate institution would entail was one that the council should not saddle the ratepayers' with. Tks local bowling club intend to erect a nice pavilion, and plans and specifications are well in hand to thai. aad. —Own correspondent, July 20.
