THE CARPATHIAN CAPTAIN
GUEST OF THREE TITANIC WIDOWS. Captain Rostron, of the Carpathia, is the hero of the hour in New York, end wherever he appears is the object of enthusiastic ovations in recognition of his gallantrv on the occasion of the Titanic disaster. The ' Evening Journal' has opened a collection, with the object of presenting a purse of £2,000 to the captain. At the Winter Gr.rden the entire audience rose and interrupted the stge performance while three cheers were given for the captain, who was in a box. In response to an insistent demand for a epeecli, Captain Rostron spoke a. few wot vis, expressing the gratitude of Mmßelf and his crew for their public reception in America. Next day Captain Rostron and tlvs Carp-ithia's surgeon, Mr M'Gee, were guests at a luncheon party given by Mrs Astor, who, though in deep mourning, desired in this way to show her appreciation of the bravery "and kindness of the Carpathian captain and crew. With Mrs Astor were • two other Titanic widows, Mrs J. B. Thayer and Mrs George D. Widener. Long before the luncheon hour large crowds assembled in front of Mrs Astor's house, and the captain and surgeon when they arrived were obliged to run thel_gauntlet.
