THE COST OF EDUCATION.
SUGGESTIVE FIGURES. [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 19. An important statement, showing that the cost of education has practically doubled in a dozen years, was presented to the Education Commission to-day by Mr Hogben (Inspector-General of Schools). Comparing the- year 1898-99 with 1910-11, the total increase in primary education in public and native schools is £560,000. The total increase in secondary education (including secondary schools, the secondary department of tho district high schools, and the Maori secondary schools) is- £78,000. The total incroace in technical education is £50,000. The total increase in higher education is £16,000. In 1900 there were average attendances of 22.418 at schools employing a single teacher, the average cost being £3 17s 6d. Iji 1910 the average attendance at ,siich echools wao 22,793, while the average cost amounted to £7 0s Bd, of which salaries represented £6 3s 2d.
