GOVERNMENT AND TOTALISATOR TERM ITS. [Special to the Stae.] WELLINGTON, July 19. Allocating two existing permits to the Rangitikei Racing Club is as far as the Government will go in the readjustment of these matters. This fact I gathered when the Prime Minister's attention was drawn to the list of 15 clubs in the schedule of the Bill introduced by Mr Jennings, ex-member for Taamartinui, in the 1911 session on behalf of the country racing clubs. The course actually taken by Cabinet to settle the Rangitikei claims was that proposed by Mr Jennings's measure, which was framed as a result of a conference of country clubs, but in naming 15 other organisations as entitled to permits the Bill provided no alternative to increasing the total number of permits. On this point Mr Massey was quite clear. He said that, so far as he knew, Cabinet had no intention of bringing in legislation which would increase the number of totalisator permits. It is being said in town that the Rangitikei racecourse has been bought by a syndicate in a general land deal; that some of the Rangitikei stewards are in the syndicate; that the land increased so much in value niter the syndicate bought it that, if the Raigitikei Racing Club lost their license, the mortgagors stood to lose little or nothing; that the Mart on Club sent a resolution to the Rangitikei Club offering to take over all their liabilities. Were these facts before the Hon. H. D. Bell, Minister of Internal Affairs (with Rangitikei Club's facts), when he restored Rangitikei's two days and lopped off Marton's one? What 'is Marton going to do with its one day? Why should Canterbury be made to suffer in the shuffle? What has Tahiatua, with a good racecourse in a big centre, done to be overlooked' Racing people are talking.— ' Times.' HOCKEY: CANTERBURY RETAIN SHIELD. The first match for the Hockey Shield to be played in Christchurch. took place vesterdav'afternoon, the, teams representing C'ante-rburv and Auckland. Owing to recent, heavy "rains. Lancaster Park was in a very bad condition. The only score was in the second spell, when Green (Canterbury) obtained the ball, and centred to Harrington, who scored. The defenders thus retain the shield. WELLINGTON WINTER MEETING. Evidence was given to the effect that, the mare was stolen from Mrs Roul=ton's loose-box on the evening of June 25, and was tracked bv its footprints to a paddock in M'Sheen's road. Other witnesses identified the accused as a man riding one horse and leadins; another iSoultoria) in the direction of Pirongia. The accused, who pleaded not gniltv! and reserved his defence, was committed for trial to the Auckland sittings. Seemingly the defence will be an alibi.
