Bums Hall.—Haywards' Pictures. Gooseberry bushes bearing at this time of the year is'unusual. Nevertheless Mr J. Maine?, of Sawyers Bay, has several gooseberry bushes with well-formed berries on them. These berries, which are- on the new growth made by the bushes last season, weTe first mot iced several weeks ago, and they are still maturing, though very riowly. The frosts have not, so far, proved destructive. The owner of the busbeo regards the berries as indications of an early spring, in further evidence of which he quotes the case of a local pear tree which is already putting forth blossom. During the present lengthy spell of wet weather the streets of the City, particularly about the business centre, have been kept well scrnoed, and the crossings regularly looked after. Mr J. C. M'Laehlan, chief insi>ector, deserves the thanks of the citizens for bis successful endeavors in this respectr Even Lower Rattray street is wonderfully clean for winter time. • Tbe now Fire Brigade superintendent recommended to the Fixe Board yesterday that a portkm of the staff and plant be authorised to proceed beyond the City limits if called upon to render assistance to charitable institutions.
