SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.
The advancement of Leon for the New Zealand Cup is due to the purchase of the son of Leolinua by Ray, who is always dreaded to effect a surprise. Some fancy wagering was done in Melbourne the other day. LSO to L4O was laid on the following five to win the V.E.C. Derby: Thunderbolt, Newstead, First Chester, Uralla, and Nordenfeldt; then four ponies to one on ten also for the Derby, viz., Dunlop, Wewstead, First Chester, Nordenfeldt, Uralla, Thunderbolt, Monte Christo, Manchester, Isonomy, and Sunny Days. Ten fifties were laid against Winchester for the Derby. The same layer then laid Ll5O to LIOO that the winner of the Caulfield Cup would come from the following: Helene, Commotion, Sardius, Blink Bonny, Lord Wilton, Soldier Boy, < The Israelite, St. Lawrence, Kingsdale .(since scratched), St. John, Velocipede, Juanna, Hobart, Anchorite, and Lord "Trumpator" (of the Adelaide 'Observer') thinks that Newstead, Dunlop, or Nordenfeldt will win the Derby. According to the Tasmanian 'Mail,' David Livingstone, the long-distance runner who visited Dunedin lately, ran ten miles on the Hobart cricket ground in 55min 32secs, though the ground was soft and heavy. This cuts down the Australian record. A fair amount of wagering has been done (says the 'Lyttelton Times') during the last few days on the New Zealand Cup and Derby, both straight-out and in doubles. Hermitage was supported to win nearly L 2.000 at 100 to 7 and 8, and Wapiti at 100 to 10 has seen good business. A couple of thousand has been pencilled against Leon at 100 to 3. Five hundred to 60 was taken in one hand about Take Miss, but her Geraldine performance has caused her to recede to 100 to 6 )off). Fusillade during the early part of the week was backed to win,the double for all the money available at 100 to 3, and after his victory in the Geraldine Racing Club Handicap ho was rushed into the position of first favorite for the Cup, and supported to win several hundreds at 100 to 15, and at onetime touched 100 to 18. His running in the Geraldine Cup, however, completely changed matters, and 100 to 8 was then freely offered without takers. Ike has receded to . 100 to 6 (off), and Turquoise to, tens (tk.) The Derby is almost a dead letter, Stonyhurst being the only candidate inquired for. Hunt is dissatisfied with his defeat by the Greymouth man, and wants to match himself against O'Loghlin for LSO aside over distances of 100, 150, and 250 yds, on a metalled road. Glen Elgin has been scratched for the Caulfield Cup, and Merlin for the Melbourne Cup. Mr W. A. Long has purchased Honeydew for 2,000 guineas. The double of Nordenfeldtand Stornoway was backed in Sydney to the amount of L 25.000. Beach has offered to row Matterson for stakes not less than LSOO a-side. It is understood that the reason for declining to row for L2OO is that the money derived from the charter of steamers would ensure his opponent's backers against loss if defeated. Reuter gives the Derby quotations as follows :—3 to 1 against Nordenfeldt; Bto 1 Firct Chester and Dunlop. At the Napier races yesterday the Selling Rac9 of 100 sovs, li miles, was won by New Yo:-k (6st 111b), "with Ugly Buck (Bst) second, and Ringleader third. The Flying Handicap, of 120 sovs, six furlongs, was won by Pasha (7st 101b), Miss Dargon (7st 121b) second, and The Bard (Bst 21b) third. L 4.232 was put through the totalisators. The Hon. James White intends to put Chester to three of his brood mareß, and enter the progeny for the English Derby.
