SUPREME COURT-CRIMINAL SITTINGS.
Tuesday, October 0. (Before Mr Justice Williams.) ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE. John Atkinson (22) and Daniel M'Laren (27) were charged with having on- the 21st August assaulted and stolen from one Ah Young the sum of L 9 2s. After we went to press last evening His Honor summed up in this case, and the jury retired to consider their verdict at about five o'clock. On returning into Court at twenty minutes to six the jury delivered a verdict of "Not guilty." The prisoners were accordingly discharged. Wednesday, October 7. robbery from the person. Charles Moxham (24) and John M'Lennon (27), who were yesterday found guilty of this offence, were now brought up for sentence. His Honor sentenced each prisoner to three years' penal servitude. John M'Lennon was then charged with being an accessory after tho fact; but the Crown offering no evidence His Honor directed the jury to return a verdict of "Not guilty." LARCENY. Maria Scanlan (18) was brought up for sentence on the charge of stealing a silk dress, the property of Annie White, of which she had yesterday been found guilty. Thero was another charge against prisoner—that of stealing from the residence of one James Beveridge Simpson 8s in money, a pair of gloves, a pair of boots, and a money-box, and to this she now pleaded guilty. His Honor sentenced prisoner to two years' imprisonment with hard labor ,on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently. HOUSEBREAKING. Edward Hughes (17) was charged with having on the 31st August broken into the house of John Moore, Samuel Hadfield, James Offcn, and James White, and stolen therefrom certain sums of money, to wit 15s, L 9 3s, and 4s. Mr T. C. Famie appeared for tho prisoner. The Crown Prosecutor stated the facts of the case, which were briefly as follows: Prisoner was an acquaintance of Hadfield, and having met him in the street on the day in question accompanied him to his (Hadfield's) house. After having had something to eat prisoner left again with Hadfield. Hadfield afterwards left the prisoner to go to his work. In the evening, when the four men returned to the house, they found that the sums of money mentioned above were missing. Prisoner had been seen at the house alone during the day by a neighbor, to whom he had spoken. On investigation the men found that the kitchen window had been forced open, apparently with a knife. Evidence for the prosecution was given by Samuel Hadfield, John Moore, James Offen, Arthur Nevill, Jane M'Laren, Oscar Brown, James Dodds, and Constable Downie, who repeated their testimony given in the Police Court. Mr Famie addressed the jury, and His Honor summed up. The jury, after a retirement of a quarter of an hour, returned a verdict of " Guilty." In answer to His Honor, Mr Haggitt stated that prisoner had been convicted at Geraldino of a similar offence, and had received a sentence of six months' imprisonment, which he had only just completed about a week before this last offence was committed. His Honor: The sentence of the Court is that you be kept to peual servitude in the Colony of New Zealand for a term of three years. This concluded the criminal business. AUCKLAND. Isabella Miller, concealment of birth, was acquitted. WELLINGTON. Philip Samways, larceny, was acquitted; George T. Skinner pleaded guilty to forgery and uttering, and was remanded for sentence.
