At the Liverpool Assizes, Edward Cunningham, a sailor, who was convicted of brutally illtreating his wife, whom he had knocked down and kicked, was sentenced to twenty years' penal servitude. The Judge, in passing sentence, commented on the fact that the history of Cunningham's life was a very bad one. He was only now twentynine years of age. He had already undergone, for a bad case of wounding, five years' penal servitude, and lighter terms of imprisonment for fighting and assaulting the police. f&Q'HNO.
