SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

Renter gives the latest betting on the Caulfield Cup as follows:—12 to 1 against Lord Exeter, 14 to 1 Helene, 17 to 1 Velocipede, 20 to 1 Lord Wilton and Gratitude. At the settling over the A.J C. meeting, the Hon. James White received L 2.972 of the total of L 5.297 paid away. After the settling a considerable amount of speculation took place over the Victorian Derby and Melbourne Cup. Nordenfeldt was backed for the Derby at 4 to 1, and Dunlop at 100 to 16. A demonstration against Newstead caused him to retire to an extreme outside price, an offer to lay 1,000 to 50 failing to meet with any response. Reginald, The Plunger, The Broker, Wilka, and Lorelei have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. The principal winners at Geraldinc were Mr P. Butler with LI 86, Mr Pilbrow with L 123. Hobbs Bros, with L 92, and Mr Poole with LSS. The Rand wick Plate on theiastday of the A. J.C. meeting was simply a farce. A mile of racing constituted the whole affair, Nordcnfelt winning easily; Percussion, his stable companion, next. Nino horses saddled up for the Waverley Handicap, Acolyte (Sst 81b) finding most supporters at 3 to 1, while "Wing, Anglesey, and Folly were next, and occasional friends supported Petronel and Lord of the Lake. Dagobert made most of the runuing to the turn for home, where Anglesey (7st) began to move up, and inside the distance a good race ensued between him, Folly, and Acolyte, but the latter came too late to catch Anglesey, who won by a long head. J. W. Raby, the English professional walker, covered 8 miles 50.8 yards in one hour at Lawrence (Mass.). This beats the l)cst American record (S miles 30 2 yards) by John Meagher. Speaking of the running of L. E. Myers, the American amateur champion, on the grass course at Widnes (England), an English athletic authority writes :—" There never was a man more naturally cut out for running. He is narrow-chested, with next to no weight above the hips; but his style of going, the way in which he puts his feet down, is without doubt the most perfect action we ever saw exhibited in any pedestrian. His style is just the same whether he is going fast or slow, and the manner in which he managed to cut down all his twenty-two opponents in the half-mile was simply superb." F. F. M'Court and G. Grimes arc the champion long-distance bicycle riders of Ireland. Recently they rode 172 miles in 17h 30min. At. Flamington on the 29th ult. Liverpool, Winchester, and Thunderbolt strode over two miles and a-lialf, all moving freely, though some exception was taken to the way in which Thunderbolt walked away. Trenton's work was duly noticed. The Maoriland Cup horse, after doing a canter once round on the sand, was sent another circle, and seemed to want his head. Phillip Augustus for tho Maribyrnong Plate is at 10 to 1, whilst 25 to 1 has been taken for the Caulfield Cup about Prince Imperial and Tom Brown to a good sum. The " knock out" of the erstwhile Derby favorite is unaccountable. The latest' Age' has the following :—" Irrespective of the numerous rumors to the effect that Newstead had broken down, and was unlikely to start for that event, it may be mentioned ; for the benefit of those who have backed him that he did a strong three-mile gallop yesterday afternoon, during the progress of which he betrayed no symptoms whatever of lameness, or anything else likely to impede his preparation." ~,,,. The wrestling match at Auckland last night between Fagan and Mathcson (formerly of Dunedin) resulted in favor of the former by two points to the other's one. NAPIER RACES. When the racing commenced there could could not have been fewer than 3,500 people on the course. The firstevent was the Free Hasdicap, of 100 sovs. One mile and a distance. . Administrator. 9st .. ~ "iJZz£\ \ New York, 6st 81b (I !l z I Rumor, 6frtl2rb .. .. ..■ (Axnp) .8 The following also ran:—Speculation (M'Cormick), Bst 101b; Bayard (HolmeB), 7st 111b; Hirenban (M'Kinny), 7st 61b; Ringleader (Wood), 7st 31b; Wallabi (Key), 6st 31b. Pasha, The Bard, and Yankee were scratched.

New York got the best of a bad start, followed by Administrator and Bayard. At the back turn New York still held tho lead, Rumor lying third, and Administrator second. Opposite the grand stand they were all of a bunch ; New York in front, Administrator and Rumor being his immediate attendants. A splendid race ensued, the two running neck and neck, Administrator winning by half a length, which he gained a few strides from home ; Rumor a length away. Dividends, LI 15s and LI 18s. Maidkn Hi'isuiiM, of 60 sovs. Two miles. Mangahone, list .. .. (Redmond) 1 Loch Lomond, 12st 31b .. .. (Lyford) 2 Grcyiing, list 121b .. .. Loch Lomond and Flcmington got away with the lead. At the first hurdle Rimu fell, and the second hurdle brought down Flcmington, leaving Loch Lomond with a good lead, Mangahone being next. At the hurdle entering the straight Mountaineer fell. At the back of the course Mangahone took the lead, Loch Lomond lying next. At the last hurdle Gipsy fell, loaving only thrco horses in tho raco. Loch Lomond made a good effort to reach tho black gelding, but was beaten by a length, Greyling beiDg a poor third. Dividends, Ll4 Is and L 9 12s. Hawkb'b r>k\ Guineas, of 2:0 sovs One milo.
