Hawea, from Northern Ports, ar ived alongside the railway pier at 7.30 this morning. «J eft the Manuk '>' ll at 2 p.m. on the 23rtl, arrived off Taranaki at 5 a.m. next morning; left at 7 a m and arrived at Nelson at 9 p.m. sime day; left at 3.15 a.m. on the 27th, and arrived at Picton at 10 a.m.j left 10.50 a.m., and arrived at Wellington at 3p.m ; left at 6.45 p.m. same day, and arrived at Lyttelton at 10 a.m. on the 28ih; left at 3 p.m., avriving as above. Experienced strong W S W breeze with heavy westerly swell to Nelson j thence to Wellington calm weather; from Wellingn *o arrival fresh N.E. breeze. We thank Mr Dougherty (purser) for report and exchanges. The steamers Wellington and Rmparooma had an exciting race on the passage from Lyttelton to this port, and the f >riner made a very good run, ouly occupying fifteen hours fifteen minutes iu steaming from wharf to wLarf. From the Rtart the two vessels were neck and neck for eight hours, neither gaining any advantage. Great interest was; token m tho race by the passengers on the two vessels, and up to midnight moat of them were on de-k waiting to see which should first obtain th.- lead; rather we should say that most of them tspeckd that the BiLgarooma would, so to sp<'ak, "knock spots "oni, of the other boat, having the reputation of btiing a very fast steamer. Up to midnight tl c-ro was a slight bro» ze blowing, which pave \ha larger boat some advantage, but ihe wind suddenly luliT■-! the sea became calm, nnd then Ihe Wellington shut ahead, and maintained the lead, gradually incroasing the distance, and eventually coming in forty, five minutes before the Bingarooma. We may mention, in justice to the Bingarooma, that she labored under a great disadvantage, the screw being con. stderably damaged. Some larae pieces had been chipped off two of the blades, and this would make Jjfegffijffißflffi °* *»*fr »kw»t w war.
