A telegram dated ?.30 p.m. states that the Vic torfans completed their first innings for a total of 190. Midwinter made 41 and Horan 34. The Champion Race.

James Riding Election.
Laweence, December 29.—Mr Hitching was returned instead of Mr Wangh for James Biding. The numbers telegraphed—Watigh 18, Etching 18 —should have been Kitching 28. Waugh 18. • $ Messrs Smyth and Co. will hare the platelaying finished to Havelock this week within six miles of Lawrence. They are getting on splendidly. The Kumara Diggings.
G&etsiobth, December 29. Having visited Kumara yesterday. I found that hundreds of diggers have left. The work is laborious, and what is doiug is preliminary, waitiug a supply of water. Hotels and stores are overdone. There ere twenty. fi*e hotels within 290 yards 6f each other in one street. Business is quiet, and there is a general complaint of nothing doing. Sports were going ou in the main street. The weatior is fiue'aud warm. Thy Kumara is said to be a good *• poor man's diggings."
