COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS.

The polling in those ridings which were contested, took place yesterday with the following results, so far as they have been asscertained by us:— PENINSULA COUNTY.

There was great excitement over the elec tion yesterday. The Blue Spur miners voted, almost to a man for their candidate, Mr Clayton. A buggy-load of voters at the polling booth was upset, and the passengers .rolled into the building like a load of coals. The accident occurred through the over zeal of the driver. One man got his ribs broken.

Taylor 12 The contests were very keen in all the ridings in the Clutha County, and almost every elector polled. Special interest in the whole County concentrated in the result of the poll for the Pomabaka riding. This is believed to involve the question of the County town, and whether the bond fide settlers of the Clutha or the up-country monopolists, mortgagees, and capitalists were to have the voting power of the County for all time. The settlers have won. SOUTHLAND COUNTY. AWARUA RIDING, Which includes the suburbs of Invercargill. The election was looked upon to some extent as a contest between Abolitionists and i’roviuoialists, Mr John Walker Mitchell (Abolitiuuiit) was elected by a majority of 100 over Mr Andrew Kinross (i'loviucialist). WALLACETOWN RIDING, Alfred Baldy retained.
