OhrisxcEuech, December 13.—At a meeting ot subscribers To tbe Eolleston testimonial to-day if was stated the subsciip ions received amounted to LB2O. It was decided that the presentation should consist of plate to the value of L4OO, and the balance in cash. Mr Bolleston was elected without oppositiou to-day for Avon riding. The COunty Elections. Christchurch, December 14. —The 'Lyttelton Times ’ this morning, referring to the County elections, says:—“ Out of the thirteen Ridings of which we have so far received news, nine have returned members without opposition or nomination; otic deed not care for a member »t all, aud only in three are there to be contested elections. The attendance of electors cauuot be dcsci ited as magnificent. Tbe accounts vary from a few persons to a concourse of two Tbe people do not seem to be frantically • nthusiastic about the establishment of the County system." Attempted Wife Murder. Wellington, December 14.—Thomas Coleman, who some weeks ago attempted to murder bis wife at Kaiwarra, has been committed for trial. [From our own Correspondents.] Native News. He and his people Lave taken 8)0 sharks, which will be prepared for the feast that bikes place at Kaipara. Tawhiao is very much annoyed at the resignation of Sir D. M’Lean. He says that now “Kua hinga te Makariui” (M’Lean has fallen) Tawhiao has nothing to depend upon, and the monarchy is not worth an old song. He is thinking of sending in his resigmr ion to Sir George Grey, and wishes to sell out and leave the country. This news was brought down on Saturday by Ngapahi natives, who have come from Taupo to Tauranga. The Kaipara natives have sold to Captain Fitzgerald, formerly of Mercury Island, a block of land containing 8,000 acres. Auckland, December 14. —Burt, wbo recently brought an action against the Supeiintendent of the Dunedin Lunatic Asylum, is now in Auckland, and intends petitioning the Governor for a Commission of inquiry as to the management of that Institution. The Government decline to extend the telegraph line to Mercury Bay. Good Templar Session. Christchurch, December 14.—At yesterday’s session of the Grand Lodge, 1.0. G.T., the following officers were elected for the ensuiugyeai ;—G.W.C.T, Bro. John W. Jogo, Dunedin; D.O.W.G.T. Bro. Hugh Bennett, Christchurch; G.W.V.T. Sister Amos, Christchurch; Q.W.S. Bro. D. C. Cameron, Duuedin ; G. W.T. Bro. William Carr, Dunedin; G.W. Chaplain Bro. Rev. S. Maofurlane, Chrisclmrch; G.W.M. Bro. Smith, Central Otago, A number of piize stock left yetterday for the Duuedin Exhibition. The Canterbury Fire Brigade will hold a torchlight procession in Christchurch on the evening of their anniversay day. Tho lodge has settled the Negro question, and remains in affiliation with America pending negotiations in England. Tbe uewly-elected officers were installed to-day, and the business is likely to close to-morrow.
