ACCIDENT AT THE OAMARU HARBOR WORKS.
An accident, which, might easily have been one of a serious character, occurred on Monday evehihg, at the quarry at the Harbor Board Reclamation Works. It appears that just before 5 p.m. three shots had been put in, and the slow-jnatches w. re applied by two men named Eugene McCarthy and btephen Smith. Two of the fuses took fire at once, but as the t!urd would not light, McCarthy placed a lucifer on top of the fuse. The warning was then given, and all the men retired. After* the lapse of the usual time, two of the shots exploded, but the third hung fire.. M‘Oarthy, thinking that the Inciter had fallen off the fuse, went up with Smith to apply another match, and when the two men were close to the blast, it exploded. M ‘Carthy received a severe cut in the fore'head, and another in the left leg. Smith was hurt very badly in the groin. ‘N. O Times.’
