CRICKET.
The various cricket grounds in. and. about_ the town wore a gay appearance last Saturday afternoon, i’erhaps the most interesting match, however, was played at Balclutha, between a team from the Dunedin Club and a Balclutha eleven. We published on Saturday the result of the lirst innings of each eleven, the totals of which read ; D.C.C., 63; Balclutha, 33. After lunch the Dunedinites again went to the wickets, and so valiantly did they wield the willow that when sime was called they had to their credit L 44 Tuns for nine wickets. The match, .had to be decided by the first innings; therefore the D.C.C. won by 33 runs. On the Balclutha side Moore headed the score with 9q and for Dunedin, Clark, with 16> was the, only one who got into doiible figures-in the' first innings. We append an account of
A match was played on the Oval between the Citizens’ and Carisbrook Clubs, which resulted in a hollow victory for the former, the scores at the conclusion of the play being Citizens’, 99 ; Carisbrook, 38. T. Austin, with 9, was top scorer for the defeated side ; while on the part of the victors Paramor made 40 and Allen 21. The first eleven of the Brewers’ Club were pitted against the next fourteen at the Norlh Dunedin Ground, and the former won easily, the batting of Huddy, for 32 runs, and Anderson, for IS, contributing greatlj to that result. The totals were : Eleven, 84 ; Fourteen, 51. One of the best contests of the day was between an eleven of the Albions and the second eleven of the D.C.C., which took place on the Oval. The match was a very close one, and at the conclusion the Albion’s were 5 runs ahead of their adversaries, the numbers being—Albions, 65; D.C.0., 60. Douglas, for the winners, scored 24, and MTntyre, for the other side, was debited with 23. The return match between the Standard and University Clubs came off on the Standard s ground. The Standard only managed to obtain 15 ; while the University managed to make 43, of which number Keen got 21. The play of both clubs was very good, considering the bad state of the ground.
