At Hokitika, the other night, he delivered an address on the subject at a Good Templars’ concert. The ‘West Coast Times’ says:— “Mr Shepherd gave a stock recitation on * Self and Life Assurance,’ from which we gathered that it is' inevitable that within forty-eight hours from the time a man insures his life, his •widow is found rejoicing in the circumstance. It was announced that his ‘ spoke 7 had special reference to Good Templarism. This he illustrated by the luck of a brewer’s widow, who dropped in for L 3,000, because her husband inadvertently took poison. The application was difficult to discover.” An awful warning to those of the fair sex •who weakly worship Fashion by wearing the absurd “pull-back” costume, comes from Wellington. One cf the local papers says that a lady, dressed in the height of fashion, while walking along the quay, the other day, tripped and fell. From the nature of her costume she was powerless to rise, and lay on the ground for some time to the amusement of the larrikin element, till a wellknown official released her from her awkward situation, and she proceeded on her journey. By a lire at Parawa, near Invercargill, a bam and stables (the latter containing a horse), attached to Gibson’s hotel, were burnt down on the 30th ult. The loss is estimated at L 350.
