The Evening Star FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1876.

A slaughtering license was granted to-day to Peter Carmicbael by the Resident Magistrate. We have good authority for stating that a well-known resident of Dunedin, who lately left here on a visit to the old country, has, since his arrival there, come in for property which at present yields L 3,500 a year. At Oamaru *n Monday, it being their silver wedding, the Rev. A. B. Gifford and his wife were presented by his parishioners with a handsome tea and coffee service, obtained from Mr John Hislop, Princes street. Auckland has entered a team for all the events at the forthcoming Fire Brigade's Demonstration ; but Superintendent Hughes is not going to bring the men down, the City Gouncil having declined to accede to his request to be allowed to accompany them. The 'Clutha Leader' is bold enough to say that Sir George Grey's acceptance of the reported offer of the Governorship of the Cape is dependent on justice being first rendered to Auckland and Otago by the restitution of those rights of which they have by the Abolition Act been despoiled ! His Worship the Mayor and Mr J. Logan, J.P.'s, presided at the Police Court this morning. Owen Branbridge, Francis Dogherty, and William Lynch were each fined ss, or twenty-four hours' imprisonment ; and John Adams was ordered to pay 40s> or go to gaol for seven days. A moat dastardly and malicious act was done on the D.C.C. ground last night. Several turfs, which had recently been put in, were torn up, pulled to pieces, and scattered in all directions over the playingground ; a hole was made about 6in. deep, and other damage done, which it will take weeks to make good. We should like to hear of the perpetrators being discovered and made an example of. The occurrence of a serious accident ou Wednesday at the Oamaru breakwater works is thus reported by the local ' Mail': —" At about ten o'clock the men had one of the blocks on a trolly which they were pushing towards the end of the breakwater—that being the method of removing the blocks from one place to another—and a small engine being on the track beside it, the driver, a man named Morrison, offered if they would hitch on a rope to give it a run down. Thi foreman of the works, Isaac Ferriton, objected to the arrangement, and after the rope had been fastened, took it off. John Wildish, however, made the rope fast again, and, towed by the engine, the block quickly moved along in the groove between the broak water and the wharf. When a certain pace and distance had been reached, in his efforts to cast off the rope ho ran in front of the trolly, and his foot becoming entangled he was thrown down, and the trolly passed over his leg a little below the knee. As the block weighed from twenty to twenty-five tons, the limb was severed in two, merely hanging together by a piece of skin." Amputation of the inj'ired limb was successfully performed by Drs Wait and Garland. The mouthly m. eting of the Har of Otago odg<-, 9 L.0.L., will tnke place on Mom day evening next, at 8 p in. The adjourned special general meeting of the Caledonian Society will be held in the Chamber of Commerce this evening, at eight o'clock. A*'grand musical festival" is announced far ne*t Monday evening at St. Joseph's <-huich, on ft*} occasion of the opening of the nfw . rgan gallery The programme includeß some of the choicest selections from the grand masters of sicred harmony, and from the wellkuewn ability of those interestin? themselves m the (patt-r tt\e concert should be a most successful ono. The proceeds are, we believe, to be devoted to the purpose of liquidating the debt incurred by the improvements.
