THE TORRES STRAIT MAIL.
One general and many officers were killed in suppressing an outbreak in Japan. A vessel recently sailed from the Clyde for Port Desire in Patagonia, with emigrants for the purpose of forming a Scotch colony there. Captain Stevens, of Lyemoon, reports that he spoke the barque Rilie sixty miles north of Cooktown, short of provisions. She had teen twenty months out, and was making for Cooktown for supplies. The mate informed him that thirty men out of a crew tf thirty-eight were down with scurvy. She had on board 180 tons of sandal-wood and 50 tons beche de mer. An important speech has been delivered at Leeds by Mr W. E. Forster in favor of the foreign policy of Earl Derby. He impressed on his hearers the necessity of rallying round the Government. The second volume of "The Life of the Prince Consort," by Theodore Martin, has just been published. It is a great success. The Empress Eugenie is about to visit Rome for the purpose of appealing to the Pope for financial assistance to the Bonapar- I tist cause.
