CITY POLICE COURT.

Tuesday, December 5. (Before his Worship the Mayor and J. Logan, Esq., J.P’s.) Drunkenness.— Thomas Hogart, James Watson, and George Adams were each fined ss, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment ; Charles Cole 20s, or three days’. Stealing Jewellery.— John M*Lusky was charged with stealing three gold rings, of the value of L 4 10s, and sixpence from the dwelling of Louisa Wilson, Stafford street, —Prosecutrix left her house for a few minutes yesterday, locking all the doors. She went to the house of a neighbor, and while there saw the prisoner in her yard. On returning to her house she found that her back door had been broken open, and three rings and a sixpence had been stolen from the purse. Seeing' the accused come out of a brothel in Machin’s right-of-way, she accosted him and charged him with stealing the rings. At first he denied having the rings, but afterwards gave them up. Sergeant Anderson was communicated with and apprehended the accused. —Prosecutrix on being recalled stated that she had worked for the accused’s wife for two years. When she saw the accused yesterday he was the worse of drink.—The Bench sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labor. Maintenance. John M‘Quire was charged with disobeying an order of the Lyttelton Court, by which he was adjudged to contribute towards the support of his illegitimate child. Defendant denied that he had refused to contribute.—The case was adjourned for a week in order that an agreement might be come to.
