MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE.

# Last evening’s meeting of the representatives of suburban Councils was attended by Messrs Rutherford (Caversham), in the chair, Moloney, Barrowraan, Heffernan, Naumann, and Thomsen (South Dunedin), Messrs U’Ren, Bridgman, and Wilson (Caversham), Messrs Halligan and Houghton (St. Kilda). The Chairman and Mr Bakrowman reported the result of their interview with the Mayor of Dunedm re tramways. Motions were made asking that the conference should be represented when the City Council opened tho tenders, but neither was passed. The Chairman also reported the result of thointerview with the representatives of the owners of riparian rights, who (he said) had astonished him and the others with the liberality of their proposals. They acceded to the proposition that they should tix the amount of compensation that they would require for a company taking possession of waterworks. Though not prepared at the moment, they would intimate their terms before the company was floated. They wore also agreeable to invest the amount of compensation in debentures. On tho other hand, in lieu of taking their water rights, the company would have to supply the present proprietors with a turbine wheel, and the same power of water as they possessed at the present time. If this was agreed upon they would abandon their rights for ten years, and substantially there would be no jnoney to pass either way. It appeared to him that a satisfactory arrangement could he entered into with these three gentlemen, J gold they evidently considered the affair to

be a highly remunerative speculation, the main expense being the laying of pipes. It was intended to have a reservoir on the highest peak of Roslyn or Mornington, as, a sort of reserve fund. On the motion of Mr U’Rek it was resolved—“ That this Conference engage to support a general scheme for supplying the suburbs with water, provided the terms for said supply be such as the Conference shall approve.”
