WRECK OF THE S.S. OTAGO.

PASSENGERS AND CREW SAVED. We this morning published, as an Extra, the following telegram from Captain Calder, kindly placed at our disposal by Mr E. J. Spence, of Messrs Dalgety, Nicholls, and Co. : “The s.s. Otago ashore at Chasland’s Mistake. Crew aad passengers all saved. Total wreck.” Immediately on receipt of the telegram the agents placed themselves in communication with the owner of the s.B. Express, and the result was that that steamer left the Bluff shortly after noon to-day for the scene of the wreck. The first officer and a boat’s crew carried the news of the wreck to Waikawa, whence it was conveyed to Edendale, the nearest telegraph station. The Express will take on board the passengers and cargo of the Otago and proceed to Port Chalmers, where she is expected to-morrow afternoon. Captain Brebner, of the ketch Palmerston, just (4.4 p.m.) arrived, reports sighting smoke off Chasland’s Mistake at 10 a.m. yesterday. Bore down, and found the steamer Otago on the rocks, heading about W.S.W. The Palmerston was boarded by Captain Calder, who informed him that the passengers and crew, anVounting to 160 persons, were all safe, and had been landed, together with the luggage and mails. Captain Brebner offered assistance, and was requested to communicate with the first steamer he met and send her to the Otago’s assistance. The Otago ran on the rocks at 2 a.m. yesterday in a dense fog, and has lost her forefoot. At low water the sea was abreast of her taffrail.
