DEPUTATION.
This afternoon Messrs Reynolds, Driver Rutherford, Wales, A. C. Begg, Jas. Anderson, Tewsley, and Mitchell waited upon the Commissioner of Customs, to whom it was explained by Mr Reynolds, who introduced the deputation, that the inhabitants of Mornington, Roslyn, and Caversham, which formed the riding of Roslyn, and as such had only one representative at the County Council, considered that they had been unfairly dealt with, as the riding comprised half or a third “the rateable propertyof the County, while it far exceeded any other County in respect to population. The deputation objected strongly to the rates raised in their district being expended upon roads and works in a far distant riding, having a small population. After a long discussion the Hon. Mr M ‘Lean said he thought the people of the districts represented had shown great carelessness in not seeing to their interests at an earlier date. He was afraid it was too late to make any change, as the elections would come off in a few days. However, he would inquire into the matter. The only feasible proposal which had been made by the deputation was that Maungatua and Outram ridgings should be amalgamated, and that the extra member thus created should bej given to Roslyn.
