Wellington, December I,—ln' M'Bride against Brogdene, the Court of Appeal deetded this afternoon in favor of defendants, with costs.—-The woman M’Shnne, tried at the last session of the Supreme Court, Invercargill, was acquitted by the Court of Appeal to-day, the Judges holding that the verdict of the jury was inconsistent, and that she was auder the coercion of her husband. Strange Doings. Auckland, December I.*— Captain Fernandes's statement represents Sterpdale sitting in state amongst Natives, in silver aud New Zealand militia uniform, and Laving three small cast-iron cannon, which were fired occasionally. Mair trotted about in pheasant feathers and a New Zealand war medal. During the fracas Mair stabbed Sterndale. Sterndale was arrested three times -at Tahiti, and fined forty dollars by the French Government. Mho captain gives accounts of frequent brawls and affrays. Hendrt, agent for Henderson and M'Farlane, proceeded to Auckland, whereupon Sterndale barricaded his house, and the circumstance related in yesterday’s telegram occurred. The island is only 140 acres i-i area. To-day the Resident Magistrate refused to issue a warrant on the captain’s information, on the ground of no jurisdiction. Sterndale now intends laying on information against Captain Fernandez. The body of a man, aged seventy-four, and who was missing since last week, was found to-day hanging from a tree in the Domain. Deceased had committed suicide. Severe Thunderstorm. Masteeton, December I.—During the last three days heavy hailstones, some measuring one and ahalf inch, fell. Yesterday the lightning struck a fiaz bnsh at B. Welch’s place, Opoki, under which six sheep had sought shelter, killing the sheep ; also a horse two chains off. The flax bnsh was torn to shreds. Illicit Distillation. Chbistchuech, December I.—John Hamilton, on whosa premises, at WaitoM Flat, an illicit distillery apparatus was found, has been sentenced to twelve mouths’ imprisonm-mt, with hard labor. Provincial Library. Christchdech, December 2.— Mr Bolleston has agreed to hand the Provincial Council library over to the Canterbury College, subject to its being returned if the proper authorities object to the transaction. In firing for the selection of the rifle representatives, Corporal Parker, of the City Guards, made 90 at the first stage. The Board of Governors of the Canterbury College have proposed to establish a school for agricul. tural chemistry, and an experimental farm of 800 acres. A committee has been appointed to select a crew to represent Christchurch at the Nelson regatta. Police Arrangements. The ‘ Lyttelton Times ’ this morning says rumors axe prevalent to the effect that Mr Shearman, the present Commissioner of Police in Canterbnry, will be appointed Commissioner for the North Island, aud Mr Weldon, Commissioner for che Middle Island. The post of Chief Commissioner for the Colony will for the present, and probably ultimately, be held by the Hon. Mr Bowen, wbo ; it is said, will shortly resign the post of Minister of Justice.
