A BAD LOT.
One of those painful episodes only too common in domestic life ,vas brought under the notice of the Resident Magistrate this morning. Agnes Robertson, a tall and not bad-looking girl, but with a decidedly rakish appearance, was brought up on a charge of being illegally at large, she having been an inmate of the industrial school; and also with using obscene and abusive language to her father in Tay street. It was shown by the evidence of the father, a respectable working man, and a constable, that, though she looks considerably older, the girl is not quite fourteen years of age, and is altogether given to evil courses. Mie was in consequence sent to the Industrial School for twenty-one months in March last year, from wdiich she absconded in May last, and being captured at the Bluff she was sent back. After another probationary period she was sent from the Industrial School to do domestic service, but she left it and came to town, as it was said, “sleeping in tussocks,” and living, it may tie supposed how. Last night her father came across her in Tay street, and failing to induce her to go home with him got her to the Police Station, Accompanied by a constable, another effort was made to get the girl home, but she resisted with all her might, using filthy language, and in crossing the Puni Creek she managed to throw herself in. Finally, she was taken to the station house and brought before the Court. His Worship said it was one of the most painful cases that had ever come under his notice, and he did not know how to deal with it. Inspector Fox stated that he had reported the case to the Commissioner of Police, and asked for a remand pending his instructions. The girl was accordingly remanded for eight days.—* Southland News,’ Nov. 29.
