Sir Anthony Musgrave, the present Governor of South Australia, has been appointed to Jamaica, and Mr W. W. Cairns will be transferred from the government of Queensland to that of South Australia. Mr Kennedy, the present Governor of Hong Kong, will succeed Mr Cairns in Queensland, and Sir Hope Hennessey, now of the Barbadoes, proceeds to Hong Kong. The Eastern Question. London, November If).—Lord Salisbury lias had an interview with Prince Bismarck. The latter assured him that the intentions of Germany were pacific, and that the German Empire would remain neutral in the present crisis. The Presidential Election. London, November 18.—Affairs in South Carolina have reached a crisis. As the Returning Board rejected the votes of two counties and declared Governor Hayes elected President, the Legislature of that State refused admittance to the Democratic members elected for these two counties. The Democrats, numbering sixty-four, then withdrew. President Grant has placed a number of troops at the disposal of the Governor of South Carolina to preserve order. The Democrats protested against this action and declared that they are peaceable. Counting votes for the election of President in Louisiana and Florida is still proceeding. [Per Press Agency.] The County Elections. Wellington, December I.—lt is understood that the Government expect to have the whole of the elections for County Councils over by the 16tb inst. The Government Advertising. Wellington, December I.—The following newspapers have been successful tenderers for the Government advertising : ‘ Otago Daily Times,' * LytteltonTimes,’ ‘Marlborough Express,’ ‘Nelson Colonist,’ ‘ West Coast Times,’ and ‘ Taranaki News.’ It is not yet decided which Hawke’s Bay paper is successful. The • Government Gazette ’ will be the only advertising medium used at Wellington and Auckland. Wh.likqton, November 30.—Private letters to Wanganui report that ex-Major Finnimore has joined the Turkish army. The ‘ Pest’ expects to hear of him soon dwelling in a marble palace by the banks of the Bosphorus, the pleased possessor of a harem of lovely Circass'ans. The steamer Taranaki, after receiving new boilers and extensive alterations, made a successful trial Trip round the harbor this evening. The sreamer Napier struck on the rocks immediately under the lighthouse at the Heads, but it was found on examination that she only damaged some of her copper. The local papers are warmly discussing the question of erecting a Town Hall to cost LIO,OOO. The house of Mr Oakes, contractor, was burnt down.
