TO-DAY’S HOLIDAY.

Mosgiel was the scene of unusual activity to-day. The special train from Dunedin at ten o’clock conveyed over 500 passengers, the Ayrshire Association’s gathering and the Mosgiel Cattle Show forming the attractions. The visitors were shown over the Mosgiel Factory by Mr Smaille before the real business of the day commenced. The AYRSHIRE GATHERING Was held on a piece of ground about a mile, from the township and was largely attended. The Fife and Drum Band was present and gave several capital selections. The first event was—200yds Handicap. Prizes, LI 10s and 15a. This event was run in heats. In the first heat Gibson (Byds) and Duncan (7yds) completely distanced Beeves (scratch) and Skinner (3yds). In the second heat, Gibson (Iyd) and J. Anderson (3yds) took first and second honors. In the final heat Mr Rhodes managed to despatch all to a good start, but Duncan was too heavily handicapped, and he won easily, Coleman finishing second. Half-Mile Walking Back, for youths under sixteen.—Eight lads competed for this event, and each one entered into the race with such spirit as to show that the prizes of 10s, ss, and 2s 6d should not bo lost by them without a determined struggle. G. Hoare aud S. Hoare toed the tape almost abreast) and the judges decided to divide first and second prize money between them; J. Murray taking third honors. Interest, however, was mainly centred in the MOSGIEL AGRICULTURAL SHOW, Which was held in a paddock contiguous to that occupied by the Ayrshire folk. The show was a complete success, the exhibits being numerous, those of shorthorns and long-weolled sheep being particularly fine ; while the committee had no cause to complain of the attendance of the general public. The dairy produce was exhibited in the Volunteer Hall, but from some unexplained reason the building was not opened, and consequently no award had' been made when our last pigeon was despatched from the ground. The exhibits in the various classes were numerous, as will be seen from the subjoined list:— Cattle.— Shorthorns, 34; Ayrshire, 45; Colonial bred, 19; any breed, 15. Hoeses.—l34.
