EVOLUTION.
To the Editor. I V IR >~} n Te V l y to "Gamma's" latest I [ only wish to inform him that I am far from f be,n S satisfied with his dogmatic assertions against Darwin. What philosophers may tell us about Darwin is of little import, unless their statements are grounded upon tacts, and I challenge "Gamma" to show anything wherein Darwin denies either the existence of a Creator or the possibility of design m Nature.-I am, &c, n v XT , A HUTTONUK. Dunedin, November 28. To the Editor. biß, The conception of Evolution, as it has up to the present moment been sifted to me, declares a total ignoring of Divine inspiration, and as I proceed I will endeavor to support word for word from the only work from which any knowledge of that or otuer subjects can be derived. Evolution attempts to solve not only man's origin, but also the earth's, for the earth was made before man, otherwise he could not have existed. Moses twice declares with precise significance, speaking of man, that "in the image of God created He him." With this, then, there is but one of two things to do—to believe or disbelieve. By the Word of God is the former, by Evolution is the latter. There is but one action in this matter to take, " Why halt ye between two opinions ?" I ask from whom or from what did man obtain his origin and the world its, after reading and being convinced by the Bible's quotations as follows :—" The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord's, but the earth hath He given to the children of men."—Psalms cxv., 16. Thus saith God the Lord, " He that created the heavens and stretched them out: He that spread forth the earth and that which cometh out of it : He that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein."—lsaiah xlii., 5. "I have made the earth and created man upon it: I, even my bands have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded."—lsaiah xlv. 12. And speaking of the earth : " He hath established it, He created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited."— lbid xlv. 18. "I have made the earth, the man, and the beast that are upon the ground by my great power, and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seem meet unto Me."—Jer. xxvii. 5. I ask those who wish for further proofs to rind the following :—1 Cor. xv. 47, Heb. i. 10. Now the great thing to consider is : Are we to accept Evolution as a science, and are we to reject the Bible in doing so ? In the great controversy between Dr. Whewell, the Master of Trinity College, and Sir David Brewster, upon the subject of whether the stars were populated, all arguments were completely overwhelmed by the latter's strict adherence to the Scriptures ; and for my part, nothing else but the same line of action can be taken to support or condemn the theory of Evolution.—l am, &c, Echo Dunedin, November 28.
