AN EXPLANATION.
To the Bditor. Sir, —I was greatly surprised on Teading your paper last night to End that the youth Bremner had stated to the Magistrates presiding at the Police Court yesterday that he obtained the drink in my house. As this statement, if left uncontradicted, is likely to damage me in the estimation of the public, I beg to giv* it a most unqualified denial. The fact is, I have occupied the house for the lap.lc six months and have made it a ruling principle not to supply drink of any kind to youths, nor to persons the worse for it. 'Those in my employ have Btrict orders to act on the same principle, so chat I can only account for the statement by Bremner being totally oblivious of where he obtained the extra dose, or that he has been bribed by some person who may be anxious to become the landlord of the much-coveted Oriental Hotel. Hitherto the police have had no occasion to find fault with me that I am aware of about the way the Oriental Hotel is conducted, and it will be my constant endeavor by so managing it that they ne>er shall.—l am, &c, William Gawks.
