UNDER THE VERANDAH.
A singular little romance in actual life has just been acted in Melbourne. A well-known professional gentleman practising in one of the suburbs took his wife and daughter to the theatre a few weeks ago to see Mr Adams play as Enoch Arden ; and both ladies, but the younger especially, were so affected by the pathos of’the great actor that they wept openly. A gentleman only that day down from Sydney was at the theatre with a friend, and was as much attracted with the grief of the young lady as she was with the sorrow of poor Enoch. He got his friend to make inquiries, found out who her father was, and called to see him next day. His statement was short and simple. He was anxious to make the acquaintance of the young lady whom he saw at the theatre on the previous night ; and although he had no mutual friend to whom he could apply for an introduction, still he could give every satisfaction to the father that he was a fit person to be either a guest at his house or a candidate for his daughters hand. The father made careful inquiries and found that he was a wealthy Queensland and New South Wales squatter of unimpeachable character, asked him to dinner two or three days afterwards, and, to make a long story short, the young lady is engaged to be married to him. Which little story will, I hope, encourage other fair ladies to give an honest vent to their emotions in public.
