Some months past regularly organised spirit circles were held, which were visited by local scientists and literary men. Tho services of Iwo of the more prominout amongst these were called into requisition on Friday by a lady residing next door to a house formerly occupied by one John Soar, who committed suicide recently. Shortly after.his death she heard a peculiar grating noise in the roof, as if the shingles were being violently pulled off, and endeavored to ascertain the cause of these i'eculiar noises. She attributed them to ghostly as?ency, concluded that the house was haunted, and broke the news 1e her neighbors, who advised her to procure the services of a minister ef the Gospel. She consulted J. C. Wilkes, a spiritist of considerable experience, who secured the services of another professor of the art. They proceeded to the supposed haunted house. Tho spirit of the defunct Johu Soar re*pondod, spelling his name; intimated tnat he had an importsnt message to deliver; was very sorry for having terminated his mortal career; sympathised with his widow; and was desirous oi conversing with her if she could bo induced to attend the stances. The neighbors disliked her exceedingly, but he was determined to continue his vi9it to the roof as often as he conveniently could, consistently with his duties in his new sphere. The spiritists desired him to give a specimen of the noise he had made on the shingles, and in a moment there was a scraping noise as if half a dozen shinglers wore at work removing the roof. J. C. W. thereon said he thought he would not be missed from the circle, and if they had no objection he begged to be excused, and would retire, but the others objected, pointing out by going he would lose the oppoi tunity of studying the most interesting manifestation.
