THE LADIES' CHALLENGE SHIELD.
This valuable trophy, which is to be shot for during the forthcoming meeting .of the Otago Rifle Association, mil be exhibited in the window of Messrs Kohn and Co. in the latter part of this week. As showing the intenso interest taken in the competition, we may mention that the whole of the rifle corps in. the first and second battalions will take part in the match, a,. favorable reply having recently been received from the Waikeuaiti Rifles, thereby completing the list. The ranges will be 200, 400, and 500 yards, each competitor in " the successful representative corps receiving J x?" " Bhiel * will be shot for annually, and the company winning it shall have the privilege of holding it for a year by giving the personal security of its officers, and on undertaking to return the shield to theoffioer commanding the district at Dunedin one month previous to next competition. Rifles : Long or short Sniders, Government pattern! audbearing the viewer's mark. Position* Standing at 200 yards, any at 400 and SQO yards. In order to wipe off the money owing on the shield it is decided that each company shall pay an entrance fee of :Lj. One important regulation, which should effectually prevent tampering with rifles, Is rule 3, which says "All competitors shall submit their rifles and ammunition for inspection before commencing the competition, and whenever required." A match for the West Taieri Company'a silver medal, which was also a competition for places for the Ladies' Shield, was firecT on Saturday. The weather was very unpleasant, being cold, with a fresh breeze from the left, with frequent heavy showers of rain. The ranges were 200, 400, 500, and 600 yards, five shots at each range. There were ten competitors, and the winner of , medal was Sergeant W. Grant, with a score of 51. Subjoined are the f cores:—_ I 200 400 600 600 Lieut. The morning was cold and wet, with a strong but not steady Wind from the>ight front, and the scores made were accordingly very poor. In the first competition the ranges, it will be remembered, were 200, 400, 500, and 600 yards j in the other two matches, only 200, 400, and 500 yards; five shots at each range all through.
