MUNICIPAL MEETINGS.
At the South Dunedin Council's meeting, last night, Cr. Babbowman called attention to the letter re the Convention iu the Star of Thursday, in which his name had been dragged in •* in a most uncalledfor and unauthorised manner."—Cr. Thomson iutim .ted that he was the author of the letter referred to. and defended his action in writing it.—Cr. Baeeowmaw contended that lie was |i<ot responsible foi any misrepresentations that may have appeared iu the newspapers, and. strongly objected to the free use that had been made of his name Cr. Homes, who endorsed Cr. Thomson's action, remarked that extreme pressure must have been put on the Mayor to induce him to allow Cr. Baueowman to represent him.—Cr. Natjhanh thought the discussion bad gone far enough.—The Secretary of the Ocean Beach Railway Company wrote regarding a defective culvert, and pointed out that unless it was repaired the line would be endangered.—lt was xe solved that the flood-gates be lilted to allow of a free passage of the water. The regular fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Council.was held yesterday evening, when there were present—The Mayor, Councillors Graham, Beid, M'Kiniay, M'Gregor, Miller, Menelaus, and Asher. Correspondence as read included letters from Mr H. M'Dermid, notifying his intention to institute proceedings in the Supreme Court in order to obtain the sum of LIO.OOO damages, which he alleged was the value of his water rights at Sawyer's Bay, and which the Council had obstructed by the [construction of their reservoir, and for the non-fulfilment of a contract made between him and th«» Corporation The letter was referred to the Solicitor.—Prom Messrs Macassey and Kettle, solicitors fur Mr W. Best, requesting compensation for the trouble and expense experienced by him through his son falling over an unprotected embankment in Constitution street, from the effects of which he had since died. The letter was referred to the Solicitor for his opinion upon it.—From Mr Joyce, solicitor to the Corporation, asking for a letter of indemnification before issuing a lease to Mr .1. E. Hooper of a piece of ground privately issued to Mr Irving. The Council did not consider there was any responsibility on the part of Mr Joyce, and instructed the Clerk to intimate their opinion to that gentleman, at the Earns time directing the lease to be issued.— Mr G. Junes' application for a lease of the quarry, formerly in the occupation of Mr E. Pei kins, was referred to the Reserves Committee.—Mr M'Fadyen Ueik to the North-East Valley Road Beard, wrote informing the Council that through pressure of business the question of the road to the Waterworks was unavoidably held over. The Inspector of Works wrote in reference to the drainage from Mr Elmer's property in George street, recommending that Mr Elmer be permitted to make a small culvert to carry off the surface water. Received and adopted.—Messrs Sansom and Treseder made application for the lease of a quarry on'the Town Beit, at a lental of LlO per annum, for seven years. Granted, subject to the usual conditions.— The Finance Committee advised that the Clerk of the Licensing Court should send notice to the Town Clerk as to what paper it would be advisable to advertise in.—The Waterworks Committee recommended that twelve debentures be issued to Mr Crawshawin payment of stuns due on contract, and informed the Council Jhat negotiations were still pending in the matter of Mr Elmer's road. The Clerk had been instructed to writ* to the contractor as to what quantity of piping, &c., he would have remaining at the end of the contract, and at what price he would sell the same. The Committee also recommended that tenders be called for laying ser. vice pipes for the supply of water to the citizens.— The report was adopted* "
