Wehikgtoit, November ll.—At Xaiwara this morning, Thomas Coleman shot his wife Florence through the body. He then put the pistol T>e. hind his ear, but the bullet just grazed his skull. It is doubtful whether the woman will recover, being.over fifty years of age. The man was not seriously injured. The cause is jealousy, Irtit it is said to be quite unfounded. Coleman, who attempted to murder his wife, is remanded for a week. Killed by Lightning. Auckland, November 11.—A flax-dresser named Sethan, at the Queen's Bedoubt, was struck dead by lightning. Ho had got into an open field. Death was instantaneous.

Fifteen cases, supposed to be tobacco, shipped-to order under the signature of " Wood, Melbourne," arrived by the brigantine Florida. No owner vfas found, and on opening the cases it was discovered that they were filled with sand. They are sup. posed to have been shipped with the object of obtaining, an advance from aonie bank in Melbourne. An Associated Press Agency. Wiluhgtoh, November 11.—The 'Times* an. nounces that efforts are being made to initiate a reciprocal Press telegram system for this Colony. The principles of the Association, it says, are that each member of it shall supply the others with telegraphic intelligence; that only one newspaper in each place shall be a member; that the following newspapers are excluded from the Associations—- * Otago Daily Times,* * Canterbury Press/ « New Zealand Tines, ' Southern Cross *; and as to cablegrams, that a person in Australia shall Be employed at LSO per annum to take European telegrams from the Australian papers ana forward them to New Zealand. The Otago' Guardian *to be distributing medium for cablegrams. The ' Times * condemns the proposed scheme for /the distribution of New Zealand news as bad, and the arrangement regarding cablegrams as unfair and likely to be utterly useless. Appeal Court. Weluhgtoh, November 13.—The Court of Appeal opened this morning, Chief Justice Prendergaat and Justices Johnston and Williams beingon-the Bench. There are sevon cases, six being from Otago and Southland and one from' Canterbury. Struck by Lightning. Napieb, November 13.—The telegraph station at Porongahou was struck by lightning on. Saturday about one o'clock, the wire being fused and a quan* tity of telegraph forms set on fire in the office. Educational Conference. Csp.iSTcnu&CH, November 23.—The Certificated Teachers Association Lave appointed two delegates to attend the conference in Wellington in January, and suggest the following questions for discussion : —" The recognition of teachers by the Government as civil servants;"" that the examination for teachers and children throughout New Zealand be similar;" " that education be free, compulsory, and secular;" and "that pupil-teachers be apprenticed for a given period." . Eivbrton, November 13.—At a meeting of She Apwinia Road Board on Saturday, the Chairman, said that he had received an invitation to attend the Convention; but he did not think the matter important enough to call a special meeting of the Board to ascertain, its opinion, nor did ho think it worth any reply. Several of the membersthonght the Chairman had acted perfectly right; but as the Convention was over, it was not thought necessary to discuss Mr Macandrew'a letter, and tfee clerk was iustructed not to record it on the minutes.
