WASTE LAND BOARD.

The ordinary weekly meeting of the Board was held this morning; present—Messrs Strode (in the chair, Beid, Clarke, and Butterworth. The Board reconsidered the recommendation of the Provincial Government to reserve temporarily from sale ten acres situated between the road Hue fronting sections 1 to 7, TpwnrDistrict and Dunedin, Peninsula,' and Ocean Beach Bail way, with the view of its being vested in the municipality of South Dunedin for public purposes. The following letter on the'Subfcct was'read from the Secretory of the Otago Harbor Board:—" Otago Harbor Board Office, November 3, 1876.—T0 the Acting Chief'Commissionerof Grown Lands;— I have the honor to furnish you 'with a tracing and description of the land lying between the Ocean Beaoh railway and the Anderson's Bay road, f reposed to be Crowngnmted to the Otago Harbor toard, and included within the plans submitted to and .sanctioned by the Governor in Council, under the provisions of the Harbor Works Art, 1674. As I understand a portion ef this same block '(has beet' recommended by the Provincial Government to be reserved for a municipality of South Dunedin, and that, in ignorance of the true, position of the matter* the Waste I»auds Board at its last meeting agreed to 'make the reserve, I have the honor to request that further consideration be given to, that matter before anything further is done in it. By a reference to the record map of the Province and to the Crown grants issued for the. sections along Anderson's Bay road, it will -be seen'thati the -boundary or*'high water mark of the harbor of Otago or Dunedin lies close up to the said road and sections. Owing to the dispute between the General and Provincial Governments in connection with the continuation of the Peninsula and Ocean Beach Bailway, it would a Pßear .that in March^las^a.. survey was, made, and-high water-mark % placed,.-much furtheFxjut than \ formerly, and muchT further out than it actually should he, and marked off as Crown land. Whether there is any legal authority to take land within the declared and recorded portions of the harbor otherwise than under the provisions of the Harbor Works Act, 1874,1 am not aware j and, on behalf of the Harbor Board, respeotfully request areconsideration of the whole matter.—l am, &c., J. f.Gains; Secretary.*' Mr Gillies appeared to. represent the Harbor Board, and some discussion ensued on the matter: butnotbing new was eUcitedVandTthe Board, after carefully weighing the arguments for and against the proposal to vest the land i* the SeuthDunedin ? Municipality, resolved to rescind the resolution of theßi ard passed on November 1. The matter thus virtually stands as before the last meeting of the Board, and no opinion is expressed by that body on this vexed question.
