" A Pitiable Case. Auckland, November 6.—The inquest at the Lunatic Asylum on the remains of Burns, aged twenty-sir, revealed the fact that deceased was an idiot, that her mother having died, and her brother being unable to maintain her;:, the pelice conveyed her to the asylum in the police van on a bundle of straw. She being covered with vermin, was, on arrival there, put into a warm bath and her clothes destroyed. Her breasts were all scratched by her nails. She .was unable to eat, and died three hours after her admission. The police evidence showed that she was in a dyingr state when taken into the Lunatic Asylum, and was taken there' because there was no ether place of shelter for her. A scandal arose on the Orari immigrant ship on her passage out, and the.captain has -laid an.infornation against a lady holding a responsible position on board and one of the ship s officers. Ihvebcabgill, November 4.—The telegrams which appeared in the Dunedin morning papers on Thursday last regarding the Abolition holiday here excite much indignation, they being a tissue of falsehoods, emanating from a Provincialist clique. Cheistchuhch, November 6.—ln the Calcutta sweeps on Satvrday nigh* on the Derby, Fallacy fetched L 9; Dead Heat, L 7; Fanny Fisher colt, L 6 lOaj-Danebury, L 6;. Wn ngler, L 5; the value of the sweep being IjII. tn another/valued L6O, Fal lacy fetched Lls; Danebury, L 3.. In an LBS sweep on the C. J.C. Handicap Guy Fawkes fetched Lls; Bob Boy, LU; Maroro,Lß 10s; Ariel, L 7; Fishhook, Ngaro, Templeton, and Tadmor, Lslos each. On Sunday nearly all the horses had final gallops. Danebury r started. a. plough- with Bob Boy, and*' lost him at a mile and' a-half. Fallacy then joined.in with the Derby.-candi-date, and went a mile at top speed. ; Danebury was much the best at the finish, Ariel and Ngaro stripped and went once round the course at half speed, the mire then dropping but and Dead Heat going the second round, with Ariel. -The colt, went kindly, and pulled-up Just- as did- Ariel after his three-mile spin; but then the mare was mueh in her old Dunedin form.; Temnleten did-a splendid three milet, the first half with Tollefarine, the last with Titania. The old horse is in grand form, and, though heavily weighted, will; during the meeting. Pongawerewere stripped and went a steady gallop twice round the plough. Fishhook showed his recent great improvement, in another raking two-mile gallop. Nectar did her work alone. Tadmor on the course, and Tommy Dodd on the outside of the plough, were sent away three miles at a fair pace. Mr Bedwood gave Guy Fawkes, Songster, and Maroro a heavy four-mile sweat; the rest of his string only walked. Cloth of Gold and Middleton had a fast mile-and-three-quarters on the course, the four-year-old bavingthe bent of it at the finish, but hanging considerably. Wrangler and Tasso stripped, but did only slow work-together. Mr Walters horses came out late; in the day. Izaak Walton and the Fanny Fisher colt both stripped and had a fast two miles on the plough, the Derby candidate then dropping out and Kingfisher, in clothing, taking Isaak another mile.
