He examined the girl the day after the flogging, and found her back from the nape of the neck downwards, reaching evtn as far as the back of the thighs, covered with read Btreaks. The marks were ao numerous, he says, that he did not attempt to count them; the skin was perfectly j mapped. Besides this, her body was in an | emaciated condition, from the want of suffljoient nourishment, so that the woman had [actually been starving the girl. The Magistrate held that the chastisement was grossly excessive, and in fact amounted to terrible cruelty. They therefore sent the woman to ..gaol for three months without the option of J a fine, besides ordering her to pay two i 'guineas costs.
