Christchurch, October 14. There have been several fires Here under suspicions circumstances lately. Another one on Friday morning leaves no doubt it was the work of an incendiary. After the fire had been extinguished a heap of shavings and rags steeped in kerosene oil, &c, was found in the middle of the floor. The police are making strict inquiries.
V\ Ellington, October 14. Th« Charles Edward, from Nelson, arrived here this afternoon with about sixty diggers returned from the Kumara.

Auckland, October 13. The 'Star,* commenting on the Governor's dwpttch to the Seontuy of State, wwta to
know how the Governor became aware of the alleged conversation between Sir George Grey and Mr Darga%ille respecting the bombardment of Auckland, and says—"How is the Governor to be exonerated from making use of what is probably only club gossip f The rowing season commences to-morrow with a procession of boats. The Rev. Father Paul's chests of drawers were sold by auction to-day, in satisfaction of the Education rate.
Roberts gives a gentleman amateur 600 out of 1000, on Monday evening.
