THE FIRE BRIGADES' DEMONSTATION.

The Insurance Companies-have voted L4O towards defraying the expenses of the proposed demonstration «on Boxing Day. "In answer to yours of 9th instant, I bo* to inform you that the Association, at yesterday's meet* ing, resolved to contribute forty pounds (L4O) fc> provide appze, to be called.'The Insurance Assc ciations' Prize,' to be competed for at the forth, coming contest, npon condition that not less than three other companies from Australia or other Provinces of New Zealand shall compete for it." A programme of foot-races has been drawn »p. and these will take place between the different events. A number of prizes will be offered, and there should be large fields for each event, as our local' pedestrians will then be in training for the Caledonian Society's annual gathering, which takes place a week later. The events to be com. peted for by firemen include the following:— First rash of the Fire Brigades, sprint race, 100 yards, for which prizes amounting to L 8 will be offered; charge of the firemen in uniform over hurdles, L 8; tramp of the firemen—in working cos- ' tume (one mile walking race), Ll3. The last) erent on the programme should cause endless amusement. It will be a, quadruped versus biped race—« distance of 100 yards round a post, the horses being ridden by firemen in full uniform.
