CITY COUNCIL.
At the ordinary meeting of the City Couuoil, held yesterday* there Was & full attendance of councillors. The Mayor presided. The Hon. Secretary of the Fire Brigade Demon, stration Committee wrote stating that the competition which was to take place was in the nature of an intcrprojincial and intercolonial one, and would have the effect of keeping up the efficiency of the different Brigades. Under the circumstances, the committee thought that the Council would bo only carrying out the wishes of the ratepayers I *l voting a prize to be competed for on the occasion of the proposed demonstration.—Or. Woodland unsuccessfully endeavored to get a sum not exceeding L3O voted for a trophy, as a City prize; and on Or. Fish b motion it was decided not to comply with the request. Mr A. C. Strode, Deputy-Commissioner of Crown lands, requested that the Council would supply him with information, so os to enable him to furnish a return, lately called for, in reference to the City Reserves, by the House of Representatives. Referred (o the Legislative Committee. Application was received from a number of cabmen, asking that licenses should not be granted to youths under ’ wenty-one years of age. It was decided to leave the question of issuing such licenses to the discretion of the Mayor. Mr Massey read the following telegrams from Mr Reynolds, and which were dated Wellington, October 7“ Legislative Council carried Wharves Bill yesterday as passed by the Lower House.’' ‘‘The following is the report of the Public Petitions Committee of the Legislative Council re Wharves and Quays Reserves : ‘That your Committee, having carefully consideied the evidence, have the honor to report that they see no reason to disturb the present occupants of the reserves in question." The following telegram was received from Mr Stout: —“ Special borrowing powers of Dunedin conserved, and Dunedin can adopt such special parts of the general Act as are deemed suitable, and remain under its own Act. The Dunedin Municipal Bill must drop. The Waterworks Extension Bill will be thrown out as a private Bill, unless consent of landowners be telegraphed. Dunedin Wharves and Quays Bill read second time, but will not be further proceeded with till your petition arrives. Will forward General Municipal Bill as amended in Upper House.” The Mayoe pointed out the urgent necessity of additional office accommodation being provided, so as to enable the Corporation business to be carried on properly. This could never be done until they had a Treasury department established. Cr. Fish’s motion: “That the three different proposals in regard to the office accommodation be taken into consideration at a special meeting of the Council to be held on next Tuesday," was carried. Several notices of motion on the order paper were referred to the various Committees interested for report.
