The quarterly meeting of Court Enterprise, JSo. 3,990, A.0.F., was held in the lodge-room last evening, when there was a very large attendance of members. The balance-sheet and auditors’ report were read, the former showing that the Court was flourishing srieadily, having added L 33 7* 7d to its accouiat, notwithstanding the large amount of sick pay expended The total worth of the court is now L9GI 16s 9d, exclusive of g<u ids. After the usual honors to til*- visiting brothers had been given, and duly responded to, the court closed with harmony,

We have received a letter from Mr Chisholm anent the meeting in Roslyn, in which he charges our reporter with misstatements regarding voting on the resolutions. Our reporter we know a«d rely upon, and cannot accept Mr Chisholm’s version in preference to his.

An accident occurred this afternoon to one of the Chinamen working for the com tractors for the Dunedin-Mocraki line. The man was engaged with others in removing the foundation of the old bridge on the Dunedin and Port! Chalmers road, when a sudden landslip took place, and a arge stone falling on him fractured his leg. Gladstone is the name given to the latest proclaimed municipality, which is situated somewhere near Invercargill. It is time more care was taken in choosing names for towns, in order that a recurrence of the same one may be prevented. There are already, we believe, two Gladstones in Ctago, and a third exists somewhere in the North Island.

T^ e fortnightly meeting of the Young Men s Mutual Improvement Society, in connection with the North Dunedin I'resbyChurch, was held in the class-room on Monday evening. A very serious charge was preferred a C ai a mau narned - William Connor, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Palmerston, on Friday last. He was accused of attempting to discharge a loaded pistol at Ah Cow, at Macraes, on the 2nd iast. The evidence showed that the accused visited the hut of one of prosecutor’s comrades, and some misunderstanding arising, Ah Cow attempted to eject accused from the premises, when Connor raised a pistol, whereupon he was knocked down and the pistol taken from him. Connor s defence was that he was drunk at the time and knew nothing of the occurrence. The Bench inflicted a fine of LlO with LlO costs, failing to pay which, it was ordered that Connor be incarcerated for three months. The local ‘ Times ’ says the money was not forthcoming.

It is said the managing committee of the M.U.1.0.0.F. have decided to hold this year’s annual feti on November 9, at the Caledonian Society’s new grounds. “Pater” writes to us asking for an explanation of the committee’s, reasons for their declining to utilise the grounds at Sawyer’s Bay belonging to the Order;—“ Some five or six acres were given to the Friendly Societies by the Government for this very purpose. For my part I would prefer to take take my family a little way out of town, where pleasant views and fresh air may be obtained, than to where report says the committee have fixed upon.’’ We have received a second letter on the same subject in which the writer, after expressing great surprise at the committee’s action, goes on to say “The Friendly Societies have, after much trouble, secured a recreation ground of their own upon which they have expended some L4OO or LSOO in improvements. The ground is in capital order, and offers all that could be required by the M.U.1.0.0.F., and it does seem strange that after the trouble involved in obtaining the ground the M.U.1.0.0.F. should desert their own for a strange ground; but I suppose the members of the Order have good reasons for their determination.”

Last week, when a motion re the Fever Hospital was being discussed at the Council Board, Cr. Woodland found fault with the management of that institution and reported that complaints had been publicly made to him of a case in which children had been discharged from the Hospital in a filthy state. At yesterday’s Council meeting Mr Johnston, superintendent of the Hospital, made answer to the above complaint and supplied the Council with the following information :—All patients in this Hospital have their clothing changed (if they have a change) once a week, and of tener if necessary; that the children in question when admitted into the Hospital were both affected with sores and vermin on the : r heads; that on the day of their discharge they were bathed in warm water and had their bodies rubbed with carbolised oil. and that if they did leave the Hospital unclean in any way it was not for want of efforts on the part of himself and wife to make them so. Their clothes were changed entirely before leaving the Hospital, and the clothes which they had worn in the Hospital were left behind and disinfected and washed before they were allowed to be taken out of the Hospital. The number of children taken to the Hospital affected in this particular manner has been considerable, but that as a rule there was little difficulty experienced in getting them put right.” On the motion of Cr. Walter, the Sanitary Committee was instructed to call evidence, inquire into, and make a report upon the matter.
