THE FIRE BRIGADE.

At this body's monthly meeting, last | fright, a committee was formed to carry out the necessary arrangements connected -with the anniversary, to take place on the 18fch inst. In consequence of the Wellington men refusing to come down to Dunedm and run for a cup valued at 20 guineas, the secretary was instructed .to 1 place all the correspondence and telegrams before the public, and decline to have any further communication with the Wellington men under the command of Superintendent Whitford, relative to the challenge. Mr P. Eussell was proposed as a working member, and the following gentlemen were elected honorary members :—Messrs J. Sibbald, J. Patterson, W. -Thomson, J. Oornish, Moss Moss, J. Baxter, P. Thornton, and T. Oliver. The resignation of Mr Rumble, owing to illfcealth, was accepted. The material facts of the correspondence are that on September 19 Superintendent Whitford telegraphed for the names of [the Dunedin competing team, before his committee was in a position to accept £ the •hallenge, to whioh Dunedin made answer that that request would be complied with the moment the challenge was accepted. The Dunedin Seoretary added :

To prevent farther delay, and also the possibility «£ your declining to accept our ohallenge, I am in* Btracted to forward two proposals for your acceptance, viz : —(lst.) That each Brigade to pick eight of their best men. (2nd.) The firemen in each team that ran at Ballarat, each Brigade picking out three mere to make up the complement of eight; the amount, time, place, &c, to stand the same as my letter of September 15th, 1876. By yotir t legraphing, "We aceept first or second proposal," as the ease may bo, this Brigade will forward the names ef their team, and insist that you do the same, &c.

The Dunedin men complain of the Wellington Brigade only objecting at the eleventh hour to the competition taking place here; they claim, as challengers, to have the choice of places : and say in conclusion, from the present attitude of the Welllington Brigade, there is no alternative but to be satisfied with Mayor Brophy's certificate.
