The Merope arrived at Lyttelton on Thursday, after a ninety-one days' passage from London. On September 9 sho encountered the full force of a cyclone, during which the seas washed on board, carrying away o great portion of the bulwarks and a part of the front of the poop. THE S.S. WAITAKI. The Waitaki, from Glasgow, via Hobart Town, arrived off the Heads at nine this morning, and was brought up to the railway pier at 10 30, in charge of Tilot Kelly. The Waitaki was built by Messrs T. Wingate and Co., of Wbitoinch, her dimensions being—length over all 16i feet, with a benm of 28 feet, and depth of hold 10 feet 6 inches. Her engines were also constructed by Messrs Wingate and Co., and are 90 h.p. nominal, which, on a consumption of 8 tons of coal per diem, give her au average speed of 9£ knots. She ha* a largo saloon, but being built expressly for the Oainaru trade, she ia not fitted with state rooms. Her passenger accommodation is, however, comfortable. She is commanded by Captain Thomson, whose report of her voyage shows tfiat it has been an uneventful one. For eigbt days after passing the Leuwin she was under cnnva3, her propeller having become disconnected. Fine weather and light winds were experience! on the run from Hobart Town. Before the Waitaki proceeded to Dunedin Captain London gave hor a spin round the shipping in Port Chalmers, passing ahead of the Thomasino M'Lelhm. She ma.le a rapid passage up the Bay, with a flood tide behind her. Observation Point was passed at a quarter to three; Maeandrew's Jetty at 3.12, aid she was moored alongside Eattray street wharf, where she attracted a good many 1 visitors at 8.40, or 56 minutes after rounding Observation Point.
