Christchurch, October 2. At 2 o’clock yesterday morning a cottage, occupied by Mr Carr, was destroyed by fire. Mr Carr was away at the time. The family narrowly escaped with their lives. The fire was caused through an explosion of a kerosene lamp after everybody was asleep. Roberts beat Weston by 148 points. He plays the last game in the Province to-night, at Lyttelton. The Supreme Court sessions commences to-day. There are ten cases for trial, the most important being a charge of murder; the others light.
Wellington, October 2, 'The criminal sittings opened this morning. There are seven cases, those of the most important being attempt to commit an unnatural offence, rape, burglary, cutting, and wounding. At the Criminal Sessions this morning the Grand Jury found a true bill against C. E. Haughton. The Chief Justice ordered a rape case to be postponed for three months, in consequence of the child being so young, and to enable her to he instructed as to the nature of an oath.
Yesterday an iron safe, at the Government Buildings, was broken open and robbed of over LIOO. The culprit has not yet been discovered. (From our own Correspondent.) Lawrence, October 2. The manager of the Colonial Bank bought a cake of gold from the Otago Company on the Blue Spur, which weighed over 3500z., the result of a month’s work. Fabulous prices are now asked for shares at the Spur.
Miners are still leaving for the new rush on the West Coast. Some of the men have been earning L 3 per week at the Spur claims. The weather is fine. „ Meetings are being held for the formation of Ros.d Boards.
