THE SITUATION.
To the Editor.
Sir,— -It would appear that a Chartist Demonstration is under consideration by the followers of Ali Baba and his man Friday, who it would seem are to order the police to take possession of the Customs. No doubt this is a fair sample of the bluster that will be talked at the theatre to-night, when the chief of the clan and his trusty lieutenant hold forth. It will be the old story of “great is Diana,” &c. No doubt, sir, you remember the wonderful prophets who lived and tried to show the ruin that was to follow the repeal of the corn laws, free trade, &c., and many other beneficial changes. Perhaps, Abolition so called will also do good, but the Opposition clique would rather the trial was not made; and if they can retard the experiment, “great will be Diana.”
# I think the Commissioner of Police knows his duty and will refuse the charms of the serpent. I would suggest that the committee meet at Mr Hume’s establishment, aud that the worthy Superintendent thereof should take the chair, that he might be able to say who (if any) should be at large.—l am, &c.,
Special Constable, Dunedin, September 25. •
