HILLSIDE TOLL-BAR.

This morning another deputation waited on the Deputy-Superintendent in reference to the above matter. It comprised Messrs Cunningham, Williamson, and B enicke, who represented residents in the Kaikorai district.

Mr Cunningham said the Kaikorai people considered a great hardship would be inflicted on them by the Hillside toll-bar being removed to the proposed site at the junction of the Kaikorai and Main South roads. The district road had cost the residents a large sum of money, and the effect of the erection of the toll-bar would be to tax them heavily —the money raised by tolls also going to the Government instead of to the Road Board. Tnere had originally been a bar on the Kaikorai road, but the toll had been abolished. They were decidedly of opinion that no bar was wanted in the neighborhood at all. His Honor said he was not aware whether the proposed site was at the junction or a few yards this side of the Volunteer Hotel. If the latter the Kaikorai district would not b3 affected.

Mr Wiluamson said another point was that the coal traffic would be sadly interfered with, and the inhabitants would have to pay at least 2s a load extra. Fifty or sixty tons of coal went up the road every week. *

His Honor said there had been no meeting of the Executive since the previous deputation had waited on him. His idea was to abolish toll-bars altogether. He would bring the matter up before the Executive at its first meeting, and see what could be done.
